Treat all the little loves in your house to hot cocoa bombs made for Valentine’s Day!

I just had to!
When the girls and I were having fun making hot cocoa bombs over the holidays, I just knew I was going to have to try to find a heart mold and re-create them for Valentine’s Day! My girls are at these early teen ages where they actually really appreciate little gifts and simple but thoughtful little gestures. Adding those little hot cocoa bombs to their stockings this Christmas was so easy and fun. And too fun to pass up the opportunity to dress them up for a cup of Valentine’s Day hot cocoa!
Let’s talk about the heart molds before we get started…
Because I am not in love with the one I got, and just want to warn you about it! I found this one at Hobby Lobby and just grabbed it without really looking at what other options might work better. They are a bit larger than I really wanted them to be. They DO work. So if that is what you have, you can use them! A smaller mold, but not too small work would easier. I saw some like this at Target, and feel like the smaller size might work better. This one is smaller, and more rounded “bomb” shape might work the best. I ended up melting the tall sides of the top heart down so they weren’t so big/tall, and that did work though. By the way, you could even use your regular hot cocoa bomb shape, and just use Valentine’s Day sprinkles to decorate the top!
The Method :: Make the shell for the Valentine’s Day hot cocoa bombs
This is as simple as a bag of your favorite chocolate chips. Or white chocolate chips if you want to go that route! Just melt the chocolate chips in a small sauce pan over low heat, stirring frequently so the chocolate doesn’t burn. You could use a double boiler if you want, but I find found this method works just fine, and is less fuss and dishes! Paint the chocolate into your mold. Be generous with the amount, especially on the sides, so that the structure is sturdy. You can do a second coat on the sides once it sets.
The Method :: The Hot Cocoa Mix
This is just our staple hot cocoa mix that I keep in a jar on our coffee bar at home during the winter months. You’ll just blend cocoa powder, coconut sugar, and sea salt to make the mix. It’s as simple as that!
The Method :: Filling the Valentine’s Day Hot Cocoa Bombs
I like to put the chocolate covered molds into the fridge to fully set. This speeds the process along. It will set at room temperature though, so you can do that too. Once the chocolate has hardened, gently peel them out of the molds and set 6 of them open side up so that you can fill them up with the hot cocoa mix. Each of the 6 hot cocoa bombs will need 2 teaspoons of hot cocoa mix to make 1 cup of hot cocoa. Add some mini marshmallows, regular sized marshmallows, or slice up your own homemade marshmallows to fill up the heart, then add the hot cocoa mix!
The Method :: Sealing the hot cocoa bombs
This is not as scary as it looks or sounds! Warm a small skillet over low heat on the stove. Use this heat to melt the edge of one of the hearts to create a “glue” of melted chocolate to stick to the other side of the hot cocoa bomb. Just place the melted side down onto the other half of the heart. The hearts will need a few minutes to set before they are sturdy to pick up.
The Method :: The Dye Free Decorations for your Valentine’s Day Hot Cocoa Bombs!
If you want to add some design to the outside of your bombs, you have so many choices! Just a simple melted chocolate drizzle using the same chocolate chips as the shell of the hot cocoa bomb is so pretty! Pink, hot pink or red sanding sugar that is naturally dyed is so easy to find these days. The naturally dyed heart sprinkles in these pictures are not available any more! I wish they were! I couldn’t find anything like them online, but I DID find some other sprinkle options. These super sweet unicorn sprinkles (which do not have unicorns, but do have hearts!) have the valentine look. And these light pink jimmies are so cute!
Now the FUN part!
Once you are ready to make your hot cocoa, you’ll want to warm up 1 cup of milk or water per hot cocoa bomb. I like to use half coconut milk and half water since coconut milk is so thick. Place your hot cocoa bomb into a mug, and pour the hot liquid over the top! The kids will love watching the inside of the bomb come to life, and then they can stir it all together to make their cocoa.
Valentine’s Day Hot Cocoa Bombs
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 12 ounce bags dark or semi sweet chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup coconut sugar
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/8 tsp sea salt
- Mini marshmallows optional for inside the cocoa bomb
- optional naturally dyed sprinkles for decorating the top or for inside the cocoa bomb
- 1 cup of hot liquid per cocoa bomb. Whole milk, milk alternative, or combo half milk half water
Instructions
- Line up your hot cocoa bomb molds on a sheet tray for easy transferring. My molds have 6 half domes per sheet and I use 2 of them. The 12 domes make 6 hot cocoa bombs.
- Pour the chocolate chips into a medium sauce pan over low heat. Stir with a rubber scraper until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth.
- Use a brush to smooth the melted chocolate all over the inside of the molds. I like to start at the bottom and pull the chocolate all the way up to the top of the mold. Make sure the layer is not super thin, watching for holes or transparent spaces, and also getting the chocolate all the way to the top of the mold. This will be the inside of the bomb – it DOES NOT have to look pretty! It's going to melt anyway! I fill up all 12 half dome molds with 1 1/2 bags of chocolate with some left for drizzling at the end.
- The chocolate needs to fully harden at this point. You can leave the chocolate on the counter to harden, or speed the process up to about 10-15 minutes in the fridge.
- While the chocolate sets, you can get your cocoa mix ready. Put the coconut sugar, cocoa powder, and sea salt in a coffee grinder or small blender and blend to combine and break up the sugar smaller so it dissolves quickly in the cocoa.
- Once the chocolate in the mold sets, gently pop them out of the molds onto a tray. Put mini marshmallows into 6 of the half dome chocolates. Add 2 teaspoons of the cocoa mix over the top of the marshmallows.
- Now you need to put the other half of the chocolate dome on top. Use a warm non-stick skillet to melt the rim of one of the empty domes – this melty chocolate on the rim will "glue" to one of the bottom domes with the cocoa mix/marshmallows to create the full bomb. Let the bombs set for a few minutes so the chocolate sets and the bomb stays together.
- You can use the leftover melty chocolate chips to drizzle the tops of the bombs. You could decorate the tops with naturally dyed sprinkles or naturally dyed sanding sugar too.
- To make the hot cocoa, each bomb will need 1 cup of liquid. Whole milk or milk alternative works. I like to use 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup coconut milk since coconut milk can be thick. Bring the liquid to a simmer – the hotter the liquid the more "explosive" the hot cocoa bomb will be! You can either set the hot cocoa bomb in the mug and pour the hot liquid over, or you can pour the liquid in, and set the hot cocoa bomb into the liquid. Use a spoon to gently stir the cocoa mix fully, and enjoy!
